Don’t Make These 5 Common Mistakes While Brushing Your Teeth

When it comes to oral health, most people know the importance of brushing twice a day and flossing daily – even those who chose not to follow that schedule. However, even those who brush regularly may be making some very common mistakes. Here are 5 things that you may need to change about how you brush.

#1 Not Brushing Long Enough

Every time you brush your teeth, you should be in front of the mirror for two full minutes. Not having two minutes is a poor excuse for skipping a brushing session, so be sure to do something twice a day. But just remember that if you haven’t brushed for a full two minutes, then you haven’t removed all of the plaque.

#2 Brushing too Hard

Brushing too hard can actually be tough on your gums. Some feel that brushing hard will make up for it. Use a soft bristle toothbrush, brush gently, and just stick to the 2-minutes twice a day schedule.

#3 Not Brushing Your Gums

You should brush 3 things twice daily: your teeth, your gums, and your tongue. For each brushing, you should start from your gums and brush upward toward your teeth in a jiggling, small circular motions from gums to teeth. This means, your brush should go along the gum lines, at the necks of the teeth and in between your teeth.

#4 Not Using Circular Strokes

Many electric toothbrush heads are circular and rotate in a circle in order to simulate the proper way to brush. You can get the same type of cleaning power by using a small circular motion with your standard toothbrush. This is the best way to remove plaque and food debris.

#5 Using Too Much Toothpaste

Toothpaste ads are often to blame here. They show a person loading up the brush with toothpaste. You actually only need a pea-sized amount to brush all of the teeth in the average adult mouth. Using less will get your teeth just as clean and save you money on toothpaste.

Don’t forget that no matter how well you brush at home, you still need to see a dentist twice per year for a professional cleaning. This will remove any tartar buildup that you can’t clean off at home. Call Dens in Dente at 02 8399 3661 today to book your next professional hygiene appointment.
