Anxiety-Free Dental Procedures with Nitrous Oxide Sedation Dentistry
Nitrous oxide is a colourless gas that is used as an anesthetic for minor medical procedures. You may have heard of it under the colloquial name laughing gas. The main role of dental nitrous oxide is in sedation dentistry. Why do we offer this option for our patients?
The goal of sedation dentistry is to provide our patients with an anxiety-free experience. Nitrous oxide accomplishes this by making a person feel more relaxed and even a little sleepy. While you are still conscious during the procedure and can cooperate with any verbal instructions from the staff, you may not even completely remember the procedure when it is done.
During the procedure, patients receive a steady flow of nitrous oxide. This allows the effects to continue while you need them in order to feel comfortable. Following the procure, the effects should end very quickly. This will allow you to drive yourself home, depending on the extent of the procedure. The staff will inform you ahead of time if you need someone to drive for you.
Side effects of nitrous oxide are rare. However, if you feel any nausea after the procedure, be sure to drink plenty of water to flush your system and keep you hydrated.
